''Dante and Virgil'' (W1850) is an oil painting by William Bouguereau, a French painter (1825-1905). It is displayed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. This painting illustrates a scene from Dante's Divine Comedy on which Dante and Virgil, his guide, go trough a journey in Hell. They witness a eternal fight between Capocchio, a heretic alchemist, and Gianni Schicchi the trickster. Capocchio is being bitten by Gianni who claimed the inheritance of another man by fraud.
Bouguereau is known for his realistic and mythological paintings into which he interpretes modern classical subjects.
