Pieter van der Borcht - Praalwagen Met Zeemonster (1595)
Pieter van der Borcht (c. 1530–1608) was a Flemish Renaissance artist renowned for his botanical illustrations, genre scenes, and early adoption of etching and copperplate engraving. Born in Mechelen, he worked closely with printer Christopher Plantin in Antwerp, producing illustrations for scientific and religious books. Van der Borcht was a pioneer of the "singerie" (monkey scenes) in Northern art and contributed significantly to the development of Flemish visual culture. His extensive output includes over 3,000 botanical drawings, mythological engravings, and humorous genre scenes. Though some works’ attribution is debated, his influence on 16th-century illustration and printmaking is widely acknowledged.
