Jan van de Velde II, Death with Arrow and Hourglass, 1633
Jan Van de Velde II, or Veldius (c.1593-1641) was a Dutch artist of the Golden Age and is remembered for his etchings and engravings rather than his paintings. His subjects were mostly landscapes and portraits. He was trained by Jacob Matham in Haarlem and became a member of the guild of St-Luke in 1614. Producing print series in his early years, he soon became among the best artists of Haarlem with already over a hundred landscape etchings by the age of twenty-four. He also created portrait prints, book illustrations and teached art.
